Nota d'usoL'aggettivo bello non corrisponde sempre all'inglese “beautiful”. Infatti, “beautiful” si riferisce per lo più a qualcosa di bello in senso estetico: una bella serata corrisponde a a beautiful evening, se si vuole indicare la bellezza del cielo, mentre se si vuole asserire che ci si è divertiti si può dire a good (o great) night. Bello si può quindi tradurre con aggettivi come “good”, “lovely”, “nice”, “great” in relazione a una bella esperienza: Abbiamo trascorso una bella vacanza, we had a lovely holiday (non we had a beautiful holiday); È proprio un bel libro, it's a really good book. -

Nota d'usoLa parola handsome si usa quasi esclusivamente in riferimento agli uomini e descrive in genere un tipo di bellezza considerato tipicamente maschile. Se si usa per una donna, quindi, esprime un tipo di bellezza che non è considerato tipicamente femminile. Al contrario, pretty si usa quasi esclusivamente per descrivere una forma di bellezza convenzionalmente femminile, e perciò se attribuito a un uomo o un ragazzo, può avere una sfumatura ironica o addirittura spregiativa. Beautiful significa “bello” o “molto bello” in senso generale ed è un termine più neutro rispetto a pretty o handsome; in riferimento alle persone, si usa soprattutto per descrivere le donne. -
